Facebook and Twitter


The purpose of the NAMED Facebook and Twitter is to promote the mission and goals of NAMED. The goals of NAMED include integrating expertise, facilitating communication, generating and disseminating evidence-based knowledge and practice, recognising excellence, promoting understanding, and advocating on behalf of males living with eating disorders. Further goals of the NAMED Facebook and Twitter are to i) facilitate networking, ii) communicate with members, others in the field and the wider community, and iii) promote events sponsored by NAMED and let them know about upcoming activities related to males with eating disorders.

The page administrator is responsible for creating and maintaining the NAMED Facebook and Twitter.

Post policy

The content of posts are in accordance with the missions and goals of NAMED. Users are able to comment on posts but are not able to make their own posts. Generally, posts fall into the following categories:

  1. Media posts. Includes links to news stories about eating disorders published by reputable sources. These articles should not contain certain highly-triggering information, including body weight numbers, nor should the articles adopt a pro-body change or pro-dieting viewpoint.
  2. NAMED-related posts. Includes links to the NAMED blog, the NAMED research section, the NAMED books and videos sections, etc
  3. Advertisements for research studies.
  4. Member Q&As. Includes brief interviews with members of NAMED who have recently accomplished something of note.
  5. Photo album posts. Photos taken of NAMED members (with permission) at events, including various eating disorder conferences.
  6. Cross-posts from other organisations that advocate for males with eating disorders, for example, Men Get Eating Disorders Too (MGEDT).

Facebook comment policy

The page administrator reserves the right to moderate comments posted to the NAMED Facebook page. Comments may be moderated because they;

  1. include language that a reasonable person would consider disrespectful, abusive, obscene, indecent or offensive.
  2. include language that a reasonable person would consider defamatory, abusive, harassing or hateful.
  3. Constitute spam or unauthorised advertising of products, services or research studies.
  4. Constitute an invasion of anyone’s privacy or an impersonation.
  5. Contain language that is pro-eating disorders or contains links to “pro-eating disorder” websites.
  6. Request specific clinical information pertaining to a client or clients with eating disorders.
  7. Are requests for help from people with eating disorders, from people who suspect that they have an eating disorders, or from parents or friends of people with eating disorders.
  8. Talk about a type of therapy or approach in an overly dogmatic way, i.e., talking about particular therapies as being inherently superior or inherently inferior.

There are two forms of comment moderation:

  1. Hiding comments. This makes the comment invisible to other users but not the page administrator or the original commenter. Hiding the comment gives the user an opportunity to correct their comment without having to delete the comment altogether. After the comment has been corrected it can be unhidden.
  2. Comment deletion. Generally, the type of comments that are deleted are comments from obvious spam accounts.

Users who breach the comment policy will have their comment hidden and will receive a private message from the page administrator outlining why their comment was moderated. The user will be encouraged them to repost their comment with the offending material omitted.

Repeated breaches of the comment policy may result in a user being banned from posting to the page. Obvious spam accounts will be banned immediately. Banning is performed by the page administrator and relies on Facebook’s internal mechanism for banning users. A full list of banned users is available in Facebook and is accessible by the page administrator.

When a user makes a comment that satisfies g) of the comment policy, the page administrator will hide the comment and send a message to that user. This message empathically states that NAMED is not a counselling service but encourages the user to contact the helpline of The Information and Referral Helpline for the National Eating Disorders Association.

Twitter comment policy

Unlike Facebook, the NAMED Twitter does not display comments from others. Therefore, no specific comment policy is required. The procedures, and types of posts, that appear on the NAMED Twitter, are the same as for Facebook.

Trigger warnings

NAMED acknowledges that content related to eating disorders, particularly media articles about eating disorders, may contain content that can inadvertently trigger distressing or problematic thoughts and behaviours for people with eating disorders and/or people recovered from eating disorders. The limitations of Facebook and Twitter (particularly the latter, which employs a 160 character limit) make it impractical to include a trigger warning with each post. To this end, and to the best of its ability, NAMED attempts to ensure that the content posted to its social media platforms contains a minimal amount of triggering content.
